Next meeting - 5th March

Just a quick reminder that our next meeting is on the 5th March.

The guest speaker for the night will be Mark Williams. As I'm sure everyone already knows Mark has been a professional photographer here in Warrnambool for many years. He specialises in Wedding Photography and this will be the subject of his presentation. The night should be a great chance to see some of Mark's work and to get an insight into what it takes to shoot weddings at a professional level.

Don't forget to bring along your prints for the April competition. The set subject is Decay (colour, monochromatic and small print).

Photoshop quicktip #12

Access the Zoom tool [Z] at any time by holding Ctrl+Space to zoom in, and Alt+Space to zoom out. You can then quickly zoom into a specified spot by dragging a rectangle out.

These are some of Les's images of the Earthrace boat when it was visiting warrnambool a few weeks ago. To find out more about Earthrace click on the title.

Photoshop quicktip #11

Hold down the Ctrl key at any time to access the Move tool [V]. This is better than pressing the V since when you take your finger off the key the original tool is still selected.

Wunta Fireworks from the Flume

I went to the flume but didn't get the sort of shot I was after. The fireworks were at the end of the breakwater, further from the boats than I'd hoped. Anyhow, here are a couple of mine, I look forward to seeing how Worm Bay got on.

TONIGHT - Wunta Fireworks

The Wunta fireworks will be going off tonight at 9:30 from the Breakwater. If anyone is interested in getting together to take photos we will be meeting at 8:30 at the carpark behind Mantra.

Fireworks shots are actually easier than you might think, so please don’t be put off trying them. Okay they can be a bit hit and miss (well mine are), but pixels are free so if you are shooting digital fire away.

f/5.6, 5 seconds, iso 100

I’m no expert at these shots, but here are a few of my suggestions

  • Set your iso to the lowest setting to avoid noise.
  • Use the Bulb setting on your camera if you have one
  • A tripod is obviously a must
  • Use a remote release if you have one
  • You can set your aperture quite wide (or at whatever setting is sharpest for your lens, maybe around 5.6 to 8).
  • Open the shutter when you see the rockets going up (that way you get the burst right from the centre). Leave it open for a few bursts and then shut.
  • Check your shot on the screen, if it is under-exposed open up your aperture and vice versa if it’s over-exposed.
  • Don’t try and get too many bursts in one shot as it will just start to look messy

If you don’t have an SLR you can still take fireworks shots. This shot was taken with a basic compact camera on fireworks mode.

fireworks mode, f /14, 2 seconds, iso 100

  • If your camera has a fireworks mode use that.
  • Have a read of your manual, it should tell you what shutter speed this mode gives. You will probably want somewhere around 2-5 seconds.
  • If you don’t have a fireworks mode there are a few things you can still try. Try the night mode, turn off the flash, and set the iso to the lowest setting.

Most importantly HAVE FUN AND GIVE IT A GO
